Popular metaverse –The Sandbox – saw its Instagram profile hacked. The hackers tried to rent out Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs from a number of users on the social media platform.

On Thursday, The voxel-powered NFT platform’s profile was compromised by the hackers and they were promoting a fabricated raffle ticket event that glorified a season 4 LAND giveaway to trustful users.
The firm informed that its two-factor authentication and other security measures had been bypassed to advertise the fake giveaway. The profile’s website URL was modified, with one user claiming to have lost NFTs after clicking on the fake link. The fake website prompts users to connect web-based wallets for an opportunity to win the fraudulent raffle. Below is a snapshot of the fake website.

Sebastien Borget, co-founder and chief operating officer of Sandbox disclosed that the hackers reached out to a number of users on Instagram with Bored Ape Yacht Club profile pictures in an endeavor to “rent” out the NFTs. They were offering 40 Ether (ETH) to use the BAYC NFTs for 24 Hrs.
According to Borget, The Sandbox took back control of its Instagram account a few hours later, while stories promoting the fake giveaway were still active on the account.
The NFT-powered Metaverse platform has teamed up with major brands and celebrities since its launch in November 2021. The likes of Snoop Dogg, Paris Hilton, and recently Chef Gordon Ramsay have partnered with the platform, not to forget some notable clothing retailers like Adidas launched NFTs wearables that are compatible with The Sandbox. The incident surely raises some concerns but Instagram will also be under scrutiny as it recently reveals the support for NFTs on its platform and this type of hack will certainly put a doubt in a user’s mind.
