Sony files patent for NFT and Blockchain…

Sony has recently issued a patent that the company is looking into blockchain and NFT technology for tracking in game assets in video games. The patent, filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc, is titled Tracking Unique In-Game Digital Assets Using Tokens on a Distributed Ledger, and the contained diagram lays out methods for tracking differences in ownership, visual appearance, or metadata of digital assets. The patent also indicates that digital assets could range from moments of gameplay to in-game items or characters.

Sony’s patent illustrates technology that could track the history of an in-game item as it’s handed from player to player, which is one of the core assertions behind NFTs. In the patent, Sony expressed, that there is no way to differentiate a clear instance of an in-game item that a famous player of the video game utilized to win a renowned tournament from any other instance of the in-game item.

The patent report also says people find it meaningful to own or use exceptional items related to admirable celebrities or activities.

PlayStation got into the world of NFTs at EVO 2022. In a player survey, PlayStation requested fans what types of NFTs they would be curious about buying. The possible responses listed contained NFTs based on Evo, music artists, esports, PlayStation items, and favored game characters.

Sony’s new PlayStation Stars rewards program features a form of digital collectibles, but the company told the rewards are definitely not NFTs because you can’t deal with or sell them.
