On June 23rd in New York City, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko declared the forthcoming launch of Solana Labs’ Web3 smartphone dubbed Saga. The Smartphone will have 512 GB of storage, a 6.67-inch OLED display, and be open for acquisition during Q1 of 2023.
Yakovenko stated during the announcement that he considered this to be something that crypto fundamentally needs to do. Further, he added that we live through mobile phones but not in Web3 because there haven’t been suitable technological integrations yet.
Saga will have various Web3 features that may make it famous with crypto natives:
- A Web3 dApp (decentralized application) store that will operate alongside an Android app store
- Solana Pay, which enables QR-code blockchain payments
- A “Seed Vault” that will store seed phrases instantly in the phone
In addition, the Saga smartphone will also feature the Solana Mobile Stack (SMS), a developer kit for Web3 programs. Software designers can utilize SMS to create Android apps consistent with the Solana blockchain. To jumpstart the development of these apps, the Solana Foundation is committing $10 million in grants to coders who want to create mobile apps with SMS i.e. Solana Mobile Stack.
Sam Bankman-Fried, a supporter of Solana and CEO of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, expressed that the mobile accessibility for crypto products is not great today. He added that one solution is to have a mobile instrument paired with a hardware wallet, similar to what Solana is making.
The device will cost around $1,000 when Solana unleashes it and is also available for pre-order now with a $100 deposit. After the news came out, the price of SOL cryptocurrency hopped 10 percent to nearly $40 per coin.
