Meta is in “very deep, philosophical competition” to create the metaverse says, Mark Zuckerberg

Mark Zuckerberg acknowledges that Apple and his company are in a “very deep, philosophical competition” to build the metaverse, indicating that the two tech giants are ready to lock horns in marketing hardware for augmented and virtual reality.

Earlier this month, The Meta CEO explained to employees that they were competing with Apple to determine what direction the internet should go in. He also mentions that Meta would position itself as the more open, cheaper option to Apple, which is expected to reveal its first AR headset as soon as later this year.

Zuckerberg speaks on the rivalry with Apple and expresses that this is a competition of philosophies and ideas, where they believe that by doing everything themselves and tightly integrating that they create a better consumer experience. In addition, Zuckerberg addressed employees and said that they should believe that there is a lot to be done in specialization across different companies, and that will allow a much larger ecosystem to exist.

Since the rebranding of Facebook, Zuckerberg has been making moves for the concept of interoperability for the metaverse, or what he sees as the next significant chapter of computing after mobile phones. Meta newly helped stand up the Metaverse Open Standards Group with Microsoft, Epic Games, and many others. The idea is to stimulate the creation of open protocols that will allow individuals to easily navigate through future immersive, 3D worlds with their virtual assets.

Apple is missing from the group, which Zuckerberg called out as not surprising in his statements to employees. He illustrated how Apple’s approach of building hardware and software it tightly controls had worked well with the iPhone, but that for the metaverse, it is not really clear upfront whether an open or closed ecosystem is going to be more promising.

While CEO Tim Cook has been forthcoming about the company’s interest in AR as a classification, Apple has remained silent about its unannounced hardware plans. Yet, all signs point in the direction of the imminent release of a high-end headset that blurs the complete immersion of AR with VR experiences that overlay over the real world. Meta is planning to release an equivalent kind of headset later this year, dubbed Cambria, and is also preparing its first true pair of AR glasses.

If VR and AR do kick-start like Zuckerberg hopes, it will be interesting to see whether Meta will be the perfect alternative to competitors’ programs. There is a parallel to draw already: Meta’s Quest headset already permits the side loading of apps that are not supported by Meta’s VR app store, identical to how Google’s Android permits sideloading. And even though it just raised the price of the Quest by $100, Meta’s hardware is primarily sold at a loss or breakeven.
