LimeWire Launches as an NFT Marketplace

Back in May, NFTHi reported the details of LimeWire’s Comeback as an NFT marketplace. Revived by Paul and Julian Zehetmayr, a pair of entrepreneurs from Austria, Limewire now plans to “bring digital collectibles to everybody”. The launch of the platform in its latest and improved state comes alongside the announcement of some significant artists releasing NFTs on the platform including Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker.

Other celebs in the lineup include musician singer and actor Nicky Jam, Dillon Francis, Grammy-winning singer Brandy, A$AP Mob’s A$AP TyY, and British rapper Aitch. The incursion of celebrities and personalities into the crypto world is not a new thing, but Limewire’s announcement just goes to show that the trend surrounding NFTs isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Focusing on music in a strange nod to the company’s not-so-legal downloading history, the new marketplace is presenting a range of original songs, visual artworks, backstage passes, and other in-person possibilities. Barker’s NFT, for example, is a real drum kit, while Brandy is delivering a collaborative flower bouquet NFT with accompanying spoken word. The possibilities are truly endless.

First Drop on LimeWire

The first drop will be released on the 7th of July(today), and the release will be from Grammy-winning producer 7 Aurelius.

The company is establishing emphasis on its “Originals”, which is a limited collection of 10,000 original NFTs residing on the Ethereum blockchain. Owning one of these will equip access to invite-only events, token rewards, and early access to NFT drops. These NFTs are minted in stages and there is a waitlist for people to join. From our interpretation, Limewire Originals is striving to act as some level of membership to the Limewire community.

The company wants to appeal to a wider range of customers by removing the requirement for a crypto wallet. Rather, potential buyers will be authorized to use credit card payments. The likely focus on user experience is behind other features on the site: Limewire will handle the NFT gas fees, or the fees needed to balance the computational energy required to process transactions when it comes to blockchain.
