Doodles and Goblin-town, Two Rival Ethereum NFT Celebrations

If you simply watched NFT NYC from a distance on Twitter this week, it would be easy to conclude that the whole event was a tragedy resulting in nothing but mockery. On Monday night, when the week had barely started, there were tweets making fun of Apefest, tweets mocking an NFT date proposal, and a viral Twitter thread stating NFT NYC had “already failed.”

The reality is less pleasing for NFT doubters and haters: despite the terrible crypto market drop, the feelings were overwhelmingly upbeat and everyone I met was bullish. As FTX Ventures’ Amy Wu tweeted, “People warned me last week that #NFTNYC would be strange since crypto was dead. I’m happy to say that the opposite occurred.”

Certainly, at lunches, panels, and parties dispersed around the city, individuals proudly displayed their JPEGs. There were several embroidered Punks, Apes, Cool Cats, and Gutter Cats on caps, hoodies, and denim jackets. People also explored NFTs with usefulness, NFTs as tickets to real-world events, and further possible use cases beyond a wealth flex.

Two parties, in particular, gave an unintentional ideal contrast of where the trendiest NFT collections now stand.

Doodles, the thirteenth best-selling NFT collection ever, staged a “kickoff party” at the Palladium Theater in Times Square on Tuesday night. The program was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., but Doodles holders were forced to sit in their seats until 10:05 p.m. Former Billboard executive and Doodles CEO Julian Holguin then took the stage.

Holguin presented a PowerPoint slide show. One PowerPoint highlighted Doodles’ accomplishments to date, with bullet points such as “sold out in minutes” and “2,600 ETH in the Doodlebank.” Three months ago, Holguin examined all of the Doodles’ marketing efforts at this year’s SXSW conference. Even die-hard Doodles fans in the crowd groaned.
